TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS

( NGOẠI ĐỘNG TỪ & NỘI ĐỘNG TỪ)

I.                   Transitive Verbs

-         A transitive verb is one that is used with an object: a noun, phrase, or pronoun that refers to the person or thing that is affected by the action of the verb. In the following sentences, admiremaintainface, and love are transitive verbs:

admire your courage.

We need to maintain product quality.

I couldn’t face him today.

She loves animals.

-         Some transitive verbs can be used with a direct object and an indirect object:

Liz brought

her

a glass of water.

[indirect object]

[direct object]

He sent

her

a letter.

[indirect object]

[direct object]

Here is a short list of some common verbs that can take a direct and indirect object:

 II.               Intransitive verbs

  •  Direct objects and indirect objects[ Tân ngữ trực tiếp và tân ngữ gián tiếp]

There are two different types of object: direct objects and indirect objects. A direct object is, as its name suggests, directly affected by the action of the main verb. In the following two sentences, ‘a drink’ and ‘a story’ are direct objects: ‘a drink’ was bought and ‘a story’ was being read.

Jonathan

bought

a drink.

[subject]

[direct object]

He

was reading

a story.

[subject]

[direct object]

An indirect object is usually a person or thing that benefits in some way from the action of the main verb. Take a look at the following sentences:

Jonathan

bought

Catherine

a drink.

[subject]

[indirect object]

[direct object]

He

was reading

his daughter

a story.

[subject]

[indirect object]

[direct object]

‘Catherine’ has received a drink, but it is ‘the drink’ that has been bought. ‘His daughter’ is hearing the story, but it’s ‘the story’ that is being read. You can often reword such sentences to make it easier to identify the direct object:

Jonathan bought a drink for Catherine.

He was reading a story to his daughter.

NỘI ĐỘNG TỪ VÀ NGOẠI ĐỘNG TỪ

I.                   Nội động từ (Intransitive Verb)

Nội động từ diễn tả hành động của chủ thể không tác động trực tiếp lên bất kỳ đối tượng nào, không có hoặc không cần Bổ ngữ trực tiếp để tạo thành 1 câu có nghĩa.

1 số nội động từ như: go, sit, run, lie…

Ví dụ:

I want to sit here.

Tôi muốn ngồi đây.

Trong câu này, “I” là chủ thể, “sit” là nội động từ, đằng sau “sit” không có đối tượng nào bị tác động lên.

She went to the zoo yesterday.

Cô ấy đi đến sở thú ngày hôm qua.

“She” là chủ thể của hành động, “went” là động từ, sau “went” không có đối tượng bị tác động lên.

II.               Ngoại động từ (Transitive Verb)

Ngoại động từ chỉ các hành động chủ thể tác động đến một đối tượng khác. Ngoại động từ không đi một mình mà phải đi kèm theo một bổ ngữ trực tiếp để thành một câu có nghĩa.

1 số ngoại động từ: buy, make, give, send…

Ví dụ:

My father bought a car.

Bố của tôi mua một chiếc xe ô tô.

“My father” là chủ thể của hành động “bought”, sau ngoại động từ “bought” là đối tượng bị tác động đến “car” (mua cái gì – mua xe ô tô)

He has sent a letter to them.

Anh ấy vừa gửi một bức thư tới họ.

“He” là chủ thể của hành động “sent”, sau ngoại động từ “sent” là đối tượng được tác động: “a letter” (gửi cái gì – gửi thư)

  • Chú ý: Có một số động từ vừa là ngoại động từ và nội động từ: ring, stop, write, break, help…

Ví dụ:

The bell rings.[Chiếc chuông rung lên]

I ring the bell [Tôi rung chiếc chuông]

The vase broke. [Chiếc bình bị vỡ.]

He broke the vase.[Anh ta làm vỡ cái bình.]

I gave Jim the book. --> Jim là tân ngữ gián tiếp, the book là tân ngữ trực tiếp
= I gave the book to Jim.
* Tân ngữ trực tiếp (direct object) là người hặc vật đầu tiên nhận tác động của hành động.
Chú ý: Không phải bất cứ động từ nào trong tiếng Anh cũng đòi hỏi tân ngữ đúng sau nó là một danh từ. Một số động từ yêu cầu tân ngữ đằng sau nó là một động từ khác.
